TRIED & TESTED
Secluded forest stay
29 November 2016
Rixt and Arjan Siersma met eachother on Curacao, fell in love, got married and became parents of three sons. They didn’t even think of going back to The Netherlands until Claartje, the sister of Rixt, send them a link to a farm in Hemelum which was for sale. They came back from the Caribbean island and fell in love with it. In a few months their life changed from a sunny island life to a life on the countryside. And they love every single minute of it!
Fast forward to 2016 they have converted two farms, It Flinkeboskje and Flinke Farm, into two special places. The first farm consists out of two holiday homes, the other one is their own home, but also the place where they organize events (like the Winter Favorites fair on December 10 and 11) and have a beautiful vintage shop. When I arrive on Thursday the first thing I notice is that the doors aren’t locked – sign of being in a village where they don’t have, or aren’t afraid of, burglars. Rixt welcomes me with a typical sweet bite from Friesland, Kalfspoot, and shows me around in the beautiful holiday home (Het Voorhuis) with enough space for 6 people. The fireplace is on and the sunset is stunning, but the clear sky filled with stars even more. There’s a kitchen, living room, library (with novels, children books and board games) on the ground floor and three bedrooms upstairs. And when the weather allows you can sit in the garden. The perfect getaway for your family: kids will love it too. The other home is bigger: you can stay here with 12 – 24 persons.
The interior is a mix of vintage items they (sister Claartje and Rixt) found throughout The Netherlands. On the other side of the road where the Flinke Farm is located you can buy the vases, chairs, flowerpots and other things you like to have for a very affordable price at their shop. Friesland really is the place to go if you love to go on a journey to find cool furniture and accessories – Rixt can tell you all about the car boot sales or places like Living Once, a huge converted farm where you can find vintage lamps, chairs, carpets and much more. Definitely worth a visit!
On the Flinke Farm they organize weddings, markets, yoga and mindfullness weekends and other events. Partly in the barn (which is stunning), partly out in the open because the farm is surrounded by a huge amount of land. So you can also visit when you’re not staying at It Flinkeboskje. And when you do like to explore more of Friesland Rixt is happy to give you some recommendations. Like she did for me.
