HOTEL ÂME ROTTERDAM

Ceramic artist Angel Kwok has opened Hotel Âme in Rotterdam, a 14-room hotel, a cafe and a shop in the monumental building where restaurant Engels used to be.

Near Depot Boijmans

Hotel Âme is located near the happening Witte de Withstraat and Museum Boijmans van Beuningen. In front of the hotel you’ll find an artwork by Franz West and some of the rooms have a view of the soon to be opened Depot Boijmans.

Hotels in Rotterdam

Rotterdam doesn’t excel in diversity of hotels. There are a few large chains that hardly speak to the imagination. Imagine an architect from South-America has a business appointment at MVRDV or Rem Koolhaas or a musician from the US coming to play at North Sea Jazz. They are used to stay at hotels such as Ace Hotel, Soho House or smaller places like Santa Clara 1728. What has Rotterdam to offer? And what about Dutch tourists who determine the destination of their city trip based on the presence of a unique design hotel? They skipped the city. Until now. Because Hotel Âme opened its doors.

Soul

Âme means soul in French and owner Angel Kwok has put her soul into the development of her first hotel. Inspiration comes from her travels to Asia, with a dash of Scandinavian simplicity. You will see brands such as 101Copenhagen, Muller Van Severen, TAKT and some furniture specially made for the hotel. The cafe is a inviting place for coffee and a small pastry. In the shop they sell ceramics, magazines and notebooks.

Monumental vs Petite

The rooms are perfect weekend retreats. All the rooms are different, this is a national monument from 1867 after all, but they all exude a minimalistic serenity. Nothing is necessary, everything is allowed. Monumental is the perfect suite for a romantic weekend away with a free-standing bath in the room. While the Petite room with a view of Depot Boijmans is ideal in its compactness for the solo traveler.
