TRIED & TESTED
Slow design store

Most striking feature:
The building itself. Many interior and design magazines and websites wrote about de Rotterdam the last couple of months. The biggest building in the Netherlands with a volume of more than 160.000 m2. The design is done by OMA, the design firm of Rem Koolhaas, in Rotterdam. What he wanted to create was a vertical city. Until recently we could only see the building from outside but yesterday I got a little sneak preview (the official opening is today) and could even sleep there. So what does Rem Koolhaas mean with a vertical city? Well in this huge building there’s a lot to do. You can stay here for a few nights (in the Nhow Rotterdam) or your whole life (in the apartments). There’s a restaurant, the municipality can call it their home from this year on, there is space for offices and for shops. And when you’re for example in one of the meeting rooms of Hotel Nhow you can see the other floors and people using the elevators. The Nhow Hotel is the first opening and OMA designed the interior of the hotel as well. What they did was showing the skeleton of the building inside as well. You see a lot of concrete mixed with golden details (like the check-in counter or the bathroom cubicle). The furniture doesn’t play a huge role – it’s more about the architecture and the stunning view ofcourse. On floor number 7 there’s a bar (accessible for everyone) and you will find the rooms on floor 9 to floor 23. Throughout the hotel you will find photographs of young talents and the hotel wants to engage with the art scene as well. In February Object Rotterdam is organized in the building for example and I can imagine they will host many more events and parties.
